Celebrating Art in Recovery Exhibit

Artwork by participants in the Healing Arts Project, Inc., who are members of ReConnect Tullahoma and ReConnect Shelbyville, Peer Support Centers sponsored by Centerstone Behavioral Health Organizations, will be be exhibited a the Artisan Depot Gallery in Cowan, TN, February 14 through March 17, 2012.

Opening reception will be held at the gallery on Friday, February 17, from 1:00 to 3:00 pm. The Healing Arts Project provides the opportunity for creative expresssion and increases the self-esteem and self-confidence of artists in mental health and addiction recovery through taking art classes, exhibiting arts and crafts, and publishing writings. “The class helps me have fun with art…I feel better about myself,” according to student comments a the end of recent classes.

The art classes are funded by agreements with the Tennessee Arts Commision, Metro Nashville Arts Commission, United Healthcare Community Plan, The Community Foundation and Memorial Foundation. Many other community partners donate in-kind services, art materials and yarn. Students learn an exciting variety of processes and techniques in the art classes.

FCAG member Denise Miller from Estill Springs is one of the active teachers for HAPI. She teaches classes in Tullahoma and Shelbyville.

Sewanee Watercolorist Bob Askew Presentation

Sewanee Watercolorist Bob Askew will be giving a presentation about his art at tomorrow’s (1-24-12) monthly Franklin County Arts Guild meeting. Bob is well know for his depictions of Sewanee architecture and landmarks. His images are produced as prints and notecards and can be found at the Artisan Depot and other locations. Refreshments will be served starting at 6:30 pm; meeting starts at 7:00 pm. Location: Cowan Center for the Arts/Community School, 303 Montgomery Street, Cowan, TN. The public is always welcome. The Way We Worked Smithsonian Exhibit coming to Cowan TN

The Cowan Railroad Museum and the Cowan Center for the Arts will be hosts to the Smithsonian Traveling Exhibition The Way We Worked. The exhibit will take place March 10 through April 21, 2012 in Cowan, TN and will explore the professions and the people that sustain American society.

Volunteers are needed to help staff the exhibit. The Center is also looking for a candle maker, soap maker, blacksmith, wood carver, basket weaver, cane chair seat maker, yarn spinner, weaver and others who are interested in demonstrating their craft on opening day March 10, 10:00-4:00 pm in the parking lot.
